Type of Work: Mentor
Purpose: To act as a mentor to one of the children on their case manager’s caseload, having the time and resources to expose the client to circumstances different from what the client typically experiences. Most clients are 15-17 years old, but kids younger than that are referred for mentors as well. About 50% of the mentors are referred to foster families and 50% to children receiving services but still residing with their biological parents. If the mentor wants to be matched with a foster child, that will be done. Typically, most of their foster families live in north county.
Orientation: After a 2-3 hour orientation with the program coordinator, mentors are asked to contact the case manager to get information about their client, then call the child (or family) to connect. First meeting between the child and mentor should take place at the foster parents’ home or somewhere the child feels comfortable.
Position: Mentors are paid $10/hour and the goal is for mentors to meet with their “client” about 8 hours each month (about 2 hours per week). Mentors will be paid for a maximum of 8 hours monthly unless the client is authorized for more hours. Presbyterian tries to match mentors with clients who are logistically close, gender by gender, and based on interests.
Commitment: 6 months to one year, plus 10 hours of training each year (mentors are paid for their time spent in training). Presbyterian offers monthly training from 10:00-12:00 on Saturday mornings.
Requirements: Submit resume to Program Coordinator, must be 21 years or older, complete criminal and CAN background check, and attend 2-3 hour orientation meeting with the Program Coordinator
